The Darien Book Aid Plan Project

As a small, grassroots organization ourselves, we at Tears of the Phoenix are excited when we find others who believe, like we do, that what the world needs is more books, more literature, and more education. Imagine our surprise when we found another small grassroots organization right here in our back yard who were doing all they could.

Darien Book Aid Plan is a Connecticut not-for-profit, volunteer organization that tries to fill the requests of Peace Corp volunteers, libraries and schools all over the world. In addition to that, they also donate books to prisons, hospitals, Native American and Appalachian groups in the United States.

How can you help? If you have new, undamaged books, you can call (203) 655-2777 or e-mail darienbookaid@yahoo.com to see if they need those particular titles. If you live in Fairfield County and have a few hours a week to spare, you could volunteer. Again, call or e-mail Darien Book Aid for more information. If you have a few dollars (and a few dollars does so much!) you can send it to:

 Darien Book Aid Plan, Inc.
1926 Post Road
Darien, CT 06820 USA

If you are a writer or an artist, you can contribute in a truly unique and inspirational way. You can donate your time and your talent in a way that will not only help raise money for Darien Book Aid Plan, but also help remind th0se volunteers that what they do has value, and that there is nothing more important than giving those who don’t have a story a book of their own.

Tears of the Phoenix Anthologies is teaming up with Darien Book Aid Plan to create an anthology of fiction and art inspired by DBAP volunteers. If you would like to participate, check out the volunteer prompts and our submission guides. Submissions will be accepted through April 1, 2009.

While you don’t have to be from Connecticut to participate, Connecticut writers and artists from new to previously published are strongly urged to contribute.

Think Globally; Write Locally!
